Neighbors United was born out of a massive neighborhood effort on Webster Ave. in Logan Heights. In 1994, weekly community meetings with residents, marches, linking up with the police, city officials , schools, churches, social agencies and numerous interested individuals led to the development of a viable and necessary community program.
In consultation with the community, Neighbors United shifted its focus from street organizing to community empowerment This provided for the creation of the first community building block, the establishment of a business for and controlled by the community, and training for local residents, to operate social development programs and counseling. On December 14, 1995 the new Neighbors United Community Market opened serving the Logan Heights community.
